Shannon Ryan is passionate multimedia journalist and storyteller.
Shannon currently works as an MMJ, anchor and producer at WDVM-TV’s Northern Virginia bureau. Shannon covers news in Washington D.C. and Northern Va., specifically; Arlington, Alexandria, Fairfax, Prince William, Loudoun and Fauquier counties.
Shannon was the first hire for WDVM-TV's new Northern Virginia bureau; helping pioneer the station’s expansion into the D.C. metropolitan area. She is a one-man-band, and the sole dayside reporter covering the region, and enterprising multiple stories each day.
Shannon has worked with the Associated Press, as a photojournalist and print journalist. Her work covering the Paralympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil and the Paralympic trials in Charlotte, North Carolina has been published in outlets such as The New York Times, ESPN, ABC News, The Washington Post, USA Today, Daily Mail and Yahoo News. It has also earned her honors in competitions such as the Hearst Multimedia / News Competition.
Shannon graduated early, with honors, from The Pennsylvania State University, with degrees in broadcast journalism and political science. Prior to graduation, Shannon spent her last semester in Washington, D.C., interning at CBS News’ Washington D.C. Bureau; where she worked with CBS Newspath, Face the Nation, on the hill and at the supreme court. Shannon had previously worked as a freelance photojournalist for CBS This Morning.
As a student, Shannon interned for FOX 29 Philadelphia, where she was able to cover stories with photographers, field produce, produce segments and write packages for air and web. Shannon was the only intern able to work the Democratic National Convention during active hours.
Shannon got her start on live television with the Big Ten Network. After working as an intern in production and as a Penn State Athletics reporter, Shannon began sideline reporting for BTN StudentU’s, which air on the Big Ten Network and stream online. Shannon was also an ESPNU campus correspondent.
Shannon worked as a reporter, producer and anchor for the Centre County Report on WPSU-TV (PBS.)
As a part of Penn State's International reporting program, Shannon spent time in Greece, specifically in Lesbos and Athens, covering the refugee crisis. Her piece on human smuggling in the Eastern Mediterranean aired on multiple stations as part of "The Journey," a special on the refugee crisis.
In 2015 she covered the Papal visit in D.C. and Philadelphia as a multimedia journalist, providing content for the Catholic News Service.
Shannon’s first internship was for the New York State Broadcasters Association, with NBC WNYT-NewsChannel 13 in Albany, NY, where she worked with journalists on assignment and in the digital department.
